A church town is a collection of houses and stables around a Norrland parish church, where parishioners who lived further away could stay when visiting church. The Church Town of Gammelstad was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1996. The Justification of the World Heritage Committee Gammelstad Church Town is a unique example of the traditional church town found in northern Scandinavia. It illustrates in an outstanding way the adaptation of traditional town planning to the distinctive geographical and climatological conditions prevailing in a difficult natural environment.
